Happy Monday. Healthy, shiny hair~

Happy Monday. Shiny, healthy hair is always in - and depending on whether you're a j.crew fan - colorful, preppy looks are always fun for spring (image is from their Spring catalogue). Anyway, I recently tried a product from Phyto haircare - their phytodensium mask - that truly makes hair feel shiny and thick after one use. So if you're looking for a quick fix for dry hair, try the mask. You need to towel dry your hair before applying it and I left mine on for a little under 5 minutes before rinsing. You can use as a mask or hair conditioner. It's available at Sephora or Nordstrom.

not hair-related but just so cute!

I was going through my camera for hair pictures and came across these totally cute photos of an Alice and Wonderland themed table setting. I was at an event at Bloomingdale's and snapped them. Just thought I'd share if you're looking for a cute birthday party or bridal shower theme. With how ornate this table setting is, you could get alot of ideas and be really creative in re-creating it.

Weekend plans?

Here's a weekend idea, if you're looking to try something new beauty related: look up the Nordstrom Trend show calendar. Nordstrom hosts beauty trend shows where brands from Nars, Bobbi Brown, Chanel to Clarisonic and T3 share tips and beauty how-to with giveaways and raffles. If you want to see the actual show (usually an early 8 AM start time), tickets run about $15 but every ticket is redeemable toward an actual in-store cosmetics purchase. If you come later during normal business hours, the "show" continues with brand artists providing makeovers and all types of other goodies. Just call the Nordstrom counter or brand you want to see ahead of time to make sure they have space for you.

cute hair accessories, j.crew

I love visiting j.crew - both the store and website for the cool photos and colors in their collection. I recently came across their cute hair accessories - an easy way to dress up a ponytail or pin one side of your hair. These pictures capture both their desk accessories as well as hair accessories - notice the pretty chiffon flowers and color bobby-pins.

Updo for short hair

Katherine has hair that is actually 2 inches above her shoulders- a short bob. She colors (L'oreal Ash Blonde) her own hair, as well as cuts it herself. To do this super-cute style, she sections her hair down the middle and twists each side in an upward direction before using bobby-pins to secure each side in place. What I like about the style is it can be casual or formal and is easy to do. It works well with her short hair as there isn't too much length to worry about when pinning it. And, if peices of hair fall from the twists, that's okay too, as it adds to the tousled look. Using a texturizing paste in the hair before twisting it would also help give it that tousled look.

Beachy Waves with a 1.25" Curling iron, texturizing paste, and a boar-bristled brush

Last week, I met Claire of Chanel Cosmetics. She has gorgeous, long hair that we decided to curl into beachy waves. We started by putting a dollop of Tela's Encore through the hair. The product is said to smooth frizzies - I also like using it to add a slight texture to the hair. We then wrapped 1" sections of hair around a 1.25 inch barrel curling iron. I misted each section with a light-weight hairspray before curling. As a final step, we gently brushed the curls with a boar-bristled brush to loosen up the curls and give it a beach-tousled effect. (A good, inexpensive one to try is Spornette's boar bristle teasing brush, available at beauty supplies for around $10). Finish by spraying with hairspray.

Another pony-tail style, easy & pretty

This is another up-do that is easy and pretty. Starting with either straight hair or hair that has been curled using a flat iron (see first tutorial) or a curling iron, you can then put it in a mid-height pony-tail. Take a strand of hair and wrap it around the rubber band and secure with a long bobby-pin. You can find long bobby-pins (often called roller pins) at either the drugstore or a beauty supply. They are sturdier for up-dos. Spray with a light-weight hairpsray.

Pretty ponytail

I made a quick trip to Chicago last week and came across a cute hair idea in United's airline magazine. After curling the hair (see first youtube tutorial, "Styling Loose Waves with a Flat Iron"), you can put it into a low pony-tail and add something like a pretty flower or printed sash. In my next post, I'll show another up-do, also a pony-tail style.
